Help & privacy
How to get started, how to show the app to someone, and answers to the questions colleagues ask most.
Privacy
Where is my data kept? Does anything leave my computer?
Everything stays in this browser on this computer, unless you create an account where your copy of the app offers one: then it’s also kept in your account, encrypted on this device first, so nobody else can read it. Only page views are counted (the page’s address, without cookies or anything you record), there are no AI services, and the app blocks itself from sending data to any other website. Files you import are read in the browser and never uploaded.
Who can see my data?
Only someone using this browser on this computer, signed in as you. Without an account it isn’t stored on a server, so IT, HR and your manager can’t see it. With one, your account’s copy is encrypted on your device with a key only your password or recovery key opens: the service can’t read it, and neither can your company. When you share your screen, use Present: it hides private notes and plans, and can anonymise names. If your company uses network health and you choose to share, HR sees totals from everyone who shares, never yours.
What does Share anonymously with HR share?
Where your company has switched on network health, Settings → Privacy asks whether you’d like to share, anonymously. It’s off until you turn it on, and shows what you’d share first: your function and site, whether you know someone in another function (and in how many), whether you know someone at another site, and in your first 90 days, whether you’d met five people by day 30. Never your name, who you know, how you rate anyone, or your notes. Each answer is swapped for a random one a quarter of the time before it leaves your device, so your share can’t be taken as the truth about you. HR sees only totals, for groups of ten people or more. Turn it off and your share is deleted.
Is it free?
Yes, for individuals. A company edition, priced per employee, brings your organisation from your HR platform to everyone at your company, set up once by HR or IT. Both keep your own records encrypted and private: Help & privacy → Plans.
Does it guess who likes me or who would support me?
No, never. How well you know someone, whether they know your work, advocacy and importance are only ever what you record yourself. Function and level come from job titles and describe organisational position only.
Getting started
What does it read from Workday?
Only the Excel export of your Workday org chart, which you download yourself: name, job title, location and who reports to whom. Every other column is ignored, and the app never connects to Workday.
How do I get the Workday export?
In Workday, open My Org Chart, go to the top of the organisation (for example the CEO) and use the chart’s export button to download Excel. Then drop the file on the app’s welcome screen (later, on any page) and choose which person is you.
I don’t have a Workday export. What can I do?
Import your LinkedIn connections instead. On a computer, open LinkedIn: Me → Settings & Privacy → Data privacy → Download your data. Choose “Download larger data archive, including connections…” and Request archive (connections can’t be picked on their own). LinkedIn emails you a download link when it’s ready: it says within 24 hours, and the link works for 72 hours. Unzip it and drop Connections.csv into Settings → Data. You get the people you’re connected to (not everyone at the company, and no reporting lines), and the app never scrapes LinkedIn. It reads only Connections.csv: keep the rest of the archive, such as your messages, private or delete it. You can also add people by hand, or fill in the people.csv template.
We don’t use Workday. Can I import from another HR system?
Yes. On the welcome screen, or in Settings → Data, choose where your organisation’s data comes from: Workday, HiBob, BambooHR, Personio, SuccessFactors or Microsoft 365. You then see that platform’s own steps, and its file imports as it is. On HiBob and SuccessFactors, and on Personio without the export permission, HR usually makes the export: the app has a request you can copy for them. Microsoft 365’s user list has no managers, so people come in without reporting lines; signing in brings them, where it’s switched on (next question). Any other HR system’s export works too, as .xlsx or .csv: if its columns are named differently, you match them, with a preview. Only the name, job title, manager, location and department are read; everything else in the file, such as pay or contact details, is ignored and never stored.
Can I sign in with Microsoft 365 instead of downloading a file?
Yes, where IT has switched it on: choose Microsoft 365 as your platform, then Sign in with Microsoft 365. You get your company directory, reporting lines included, read straight into this browser; many companies copy their HR platform (Workday, HiBob and others) into it, so it’s the same org chart as the export. You sign in on Microsoft’s own page, then the usual review opens with you already chosen, and nothing is added until you import. The sign-in itself isn’t kept, and nothing is sent anywhere else. To refresh it, sign in again: Home offers it once your data is a month old. If it says it isn’t switched on, or that your company hasn’t approved it yet, Copy a request for IT writes the message for you; until then, the download works as before.
What does “Your company connects BambooHR” mean?
Your company has connected its HR platform (such as Workday, HiBob, BambooHR, Personio, SAP SuccessFactors, ADP or UKG) to this app’s own server, so you don’t need to export anything. Press Get it from BambooHR (or your platform) on the welcome screen or in Settings → Data: everyone’s name, job title, department, site and manager come into the usual review, and nothing is added until you import. A week after your last import, Home offers Refresh from BambooHR, and What changed shows who joined, moved or was promoted. The app’s server reads only those five things per person, keeps nothing, and never sees your ratings, notes or plans: they stay in your browser, as always. If your company asks you to, you sign in with Microsoft 365 first, so only colleagues can read the organisation.
How do I record who I know?
Use Quick rate. It goes through your nearest people, your manager and team first, and you press 0–5 for how well you know each person: about three minutes for 40 people. You can also rate anyone, any time: in the People table, or under their name when you open their profile from a map, a list or search.
Using it
How are the suggestions on Connect made?
From organisational facts (site, function, level, reporting lines) and your own plan (target roles, people you marked). Every suggestion shows its reasons and a small first step, such as a coffee at your site or an introduction through someone you know.
Can it help me ask for an introduction?
Yes. Where the app names someone who could introduce you (a suggestion that says “Ask … to introduce you”, or a profile’s How you’re connected), Draft a message writes a short, polite request to them. Choose a Teams message or an email, change anything you like, and copy it. The app never sends anything, and the draft only uses names, job titles, places and functions, never your private ratings, notes or plans. It ends with a P.S. inviting them to make their own map, with a link where your copy of the app has one; untick Invite … to make their own map to leave it out.
I’ve just joined. Who should I meet first?
On Connect, find Your first 90 days and press Make my plan: 10 to 15 people to meet, in three steps. Weeks 1–2, your team: your manager, your reports, your team-mates and your skip-level manager. Weeks 3–6, your part of the business: your manager’s peers, your division’s leaders, and leaders at your site in other functions. Weeks 7–12, across the business: people in your function elsewhere, its business partner and its head. Each comes with the reason and a first step. Add to my plan puts each meeting in This week when it’s due, and the card shows how many you’ve met. It uses the organisation chart only. Not new? Not now puts it away.
Can I make a plan for someone joining my team?
Yes. Open their profile, then More actions → First 90 days plan for …, and choose their first day. Copy as text gives you the plan to paste into an email or a Teams message; Download calendar saves a reminder for each meeting. The text can end with an invitation to make their own map. It uses the organisation chart only, never your ratings or notes, and the app sends nothing.
What is My site?
A tab under Insights: everyone at your site by function and level, how many of them you know in each (open a cell to see who), and the leaders there you don’t know yet. Pick another site from the list, for example before a visit. Sites come from the Location column of your import.
What’s on Home?
Today, in a few blocks. At the top: the day, a greeting, a line on how your month is going, and your circle, the people you know round you, each in their function’s colour (point at someone for their name, click to open them). Your one next step: one person to meet, with the reasons, the warm path (See the way shows it on the map) and one button; Plan it puts the first step into this week, Not now shows the next person (back in a month), and the arrows show the next two picks without putting anyone off. In your first week, it’s rating the people closest to you. This week: steps from your plan that are due or overdue, and people you know well but last spoke to more than 90 days ago; Done logs the conversation and ticks the step off, Snooze (point at the row) puts it off, and Add a step to your plan is at the foot. Your month, for you only: the last 30 days’ conversations against your usual, the last eight weeks as bars, new people met and who you’ve kept in touch with. Your reach, for you only: every function in its colour, filled where you know someone; click one to meet people there. Then what changed near you. The map, all your numbers and the gaps are in Map and Insights.
How do I log a conversation?
Press ⌘K (Ctrl+K on Windows), choose Log a conversation…, type a name and press Enter. You can also use Log conversation on anyone’s profile, or Done in This week. One line is enough; you can also say how it went (0 to 5), how well you know them now, and plan a follow-up, which then shows in This week.
How often do I catch up with leaders, peers and my team?
Insights → Analysis → Your catch-up rhythm: for each group (your team, your managers, Leadership, senior leaders, peers), the middle of the catch-ups you planned when logging conversations, whether you usually move the suggestion sooner or later, and how often you actually spoke. Open a group to see its people. When you log someone new, the catch-up starts from their group’s usual. It’s only your own choices, summarised, and hidden while presenting.
What’s the quickest way to log who I spoke to?
On Connect, press I connected with someone: pick them (the people you most likely just spoke to are one click away), say when and how it went, 0 to 5, and press Log it. It suggests when to catch up again, always on a weekday, sooner after a conversation that went well, and adds it to your plan. Too soon or too far? Sooner and Later move it, and next time it suggests the gap you chose for them. Recent conversations on Connect shows your latest, and when to catch up.
I added someone to my plan by mistake. How do I take it back?
On Connect, their suggestion reads In your plan: press its ×, or ⋯ → Remove from your plan. They’re no longer a target, and the step Add to plan planned goes too. They stay suggested, so you can add them again; Not relevant is only for hiding someone. Your own steps and catch-ups with them stay.
Can catch-ups go on the days I’m least busy?
Yes. Under the catch-up in I connected with someone, press Choose your quieter days, or go to Settings → Profile, and pick the days of the week you’re usually least busy. Catch-ups, follow-ups and your own first 90 days’ meetings then go on the first of those days on or after they’re due. With none chosen, any weekday. It’s your own choice, kept with your records.
Where are my conversations, and how do I delete one logged by mistake?
On Connect, press History, beside I connected with someone: every conversation you’ve logged, newest first, in a panel on the right. Search finds a name or what it was about. Logged one with the wrong person? Press its delete button. The app asks first, then the conversation goes, with the catch-up it planned, and a step it ticked off opens again. Your insights are worked out again without it: their last contact, your catch-up rhythm, your progress and Connect’s suggestions. Undo brings it back. A person’s profile can delete one too, under Interaction history.
How do I see how to reach someone?
Click them on a map: the Network map, the Organisation chart or the Globe. The way to them is drawn in bold, from you through the people in between, each numbered from 1, the first person after you. A card over the map lists them, with how each is linked to the one before (“you know them · 4/5”, “Sam’s manager”), and their profile opens beside it. If part of the way was off screen, the map zooms out just enough, and the card you clicked stays where it was. The arrows on that card switch to another way there, when there is one, and × closes it. The way stays when you close their profile, until you choose someone else. It comes from your recorded relationships and the reporting lines only: how you appear to be connected, not who would introduce you.
What do the colours mean?
Colour is the person’s business function: Operations teal, Commercial orange, Technical violet, Markets gold, HR magenta, Finance green, Digital blue and Strategy crimson, and grey for others. Each function’s name is in a chip of its colour around the map and in the legend. Everyone sits in their own function’s sector, your managers too. The CEO and the executives reporting straight to them sit together under Leadership, beside your function, each in their own function’s colour. How well you know someone shows in the outline around their dot and the thickness of the line to them. Hover a function in the legend to highlight it.
Can I put a planned step in my calendar?
Yes. A step with a day, such as one planned from This week or with Say hello on What changed, has a calendar button. It saves a small calendar file (.ics): open it to add the step to Outlook or your calendar app. It’s an all-day reminder, marked private, with just the step and who it’s with. The app itself sends nothing anywhere.
Can I share a picture of my network, on LinkedIn say?
Yes. On any map, press Share a picture: your network, with you in the middle, colleagues as dots in their functions’ colours, your relationships as lines, and your own numbers. Nobody is named: no names, titles, places or company. Leaders keep their functions’ colours, as on the map; a function with fewer than five people is grey. Copy it, Download it, or Share… where your device offers it; you can leave the functions’ names out of the key. It’s made on your device and nothing is uploaded, so it’s there while presenting too.
The globe doesn’t show, or doesn’t turn. Why?
The globe needs 3D graphics, which some laptops don’t have: locked-down laptops, virtual desktops, or a browser with graphics acceleration turned off in its settings. The app then says so, and points to the Network map and the People table, which show the same people. If your computer is set to reduce motion, the globe holds still until you press Rotate.
How do I keep it up to date?
Download a fresh Workday export every month or so and drop it on any page. Home reminds you once your last import is a month old, and Settings → Data → Add a monthly reminder to your calendar puts the first Monday of each month in your calendar. Your ratings, notes and plans are kept, and What changed (under Insights, and linked from the message after the import) shows who joined, who moved and new leaders near you.
Your data
Can I install it as an app, or use it offline?
Yes. In Chrome or Edge, click Install at the bottom of the sidebar (or the install icon in the address bar). On an iPhone or iPad, open it in Safari and tap Share → Add to Home Screen. It then opens in its own window and works offline once it has been opened, every page and the globe included. On a computer, the installed app uses this browser’s data. On an iPhone or iPad, the Home Screen app keeps its own copy, separate from Safari: import your data, or restore a backup, inside it.
What is Your progress?
Your own numbers (known contacts, strong and senior relationships, people who know your work, and functions reached), saved once a month on this device, so you can see your network grow. Conversations and completed actions are counted by their own dates. Like everything else it stays in this browser, and it’s included in your backups.
How do I back it up, or move to another computer or browser?
Settings → Data → Download a backup saves one file with everything. Protect it with a password (recommended): it’s encrypted in this browser before it’s saved, so it’s safe to keep in OneDrive or send to your phone. On the other computer, phone or browser, open the app, choose Restore a backup (on the welcome screen, or in Settings → Data) and type the password. If that device already has data, Combine keeps both: for anyone updated on both, the newer update is kept. Your data belongs to this browser and this app address, so a different browser, computer or address starts empty until you restore.
What if I forget the backup password?
Then that backup can’t be opened: the password isn’t stored anywhere, and nobody can recover it, not even the app’s owner. Your data in this browser isn’t affected, so make a new backup with a password you’ll remember, or keep it in your password manager.
Can I keep my laptop and phone in step?
Where your copy of the app offers accounts (Settings → Account), create one on one device and sign in on the other: changes on one appear on the other. Everything is encrypted on the device before it’s saved to your account, so the service can’t read it. Anything already on a device when you sign in is kept, and combined with your account’s copy. Without an account, move your data with a protected backup.
What if I forget my account password?
Use the recovery key you saved when you made the account: Settings → Account → Forgot your password? Nobody else can reset your password, not the service and not IT, because it never leaves your device. Without the password or the recovery key, your account’s copy can’t be opened; what’s on your devices stays there.
Can the browser delete my data?
It can: when you clear your browsing data, when the computer runs very short of space, and in Safari after about a week without a visit (not for an app added to the Home Screen). The app asks the browser to keep your data, and Settings → Data shows whether it agreed. Home reminds you to back up when a lot of your ratings and notes aren’t in a backup yet, or any have waited a month.
How do I delete everything?
Settings → Data → Delete all data removes everything in the workspace. Clearing this site’s data in your browser does the same. Remember to delete any backup files you saved. The demo can’t be deleted, as it’s only an example: to start it afresh, use the demo picker in its banner.
